"vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. a person may be proud without being vain. pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."
jane austen
pride & prejudice
(it's the 200th anniversary of pride & prejudice this year!)
if i were to identify myself through jane austen characters, i would be some crazy mash-up of
elizabeth bennet (judgmental, opinionated, passionate, mischievous)
fitzwilliam darcy (prideful, intimidating, loyal, protective)
and elinor dashwood (dependable, private in unhappiness, voice of reason, keeper of secrets)
