what to do when the beastly boys shatter your grandmothers china teapot while bashing around in the garage . . .

i mentioned that my sister and i made ornaments out of my grandmas china teapot the boys broke over the summer . . .
this is how we did it.
***
you will need:
wire - 2 kinds; 16ish gauge and 30ish gauge
wire cutters and needle nose pliers
whatever you want to put in the middle
***
first, cut a length of the ticker wire. this will vary depending on how large you want your ornament to be. i used about a foot and a half. you can always trim the excess.

***
second, make a loop approximately 1-2 inches from the end, and then begin bending the wire into the shape you've chosen. i suggest you use something as a pattern. i used a wooden star i had handy. go slowly! after you bend the wire, there is a kink that is almost impossible to get out.

***
once you get your entire shape done, clip any excess wire. you can either make the ends meet exactly, or overlap.

***
now take the smaller wire and wrap the entire shape. i like to start where the two ends come together.

***
next, pick the pieces you are going to use inside your ornament.

***
start at one point, place the glass/china/whatever and begin wrapping with the smaller wire to secure the shards. as one piece becomes secure, move to the next point, working your way to the center.
***
once you get everything into place, clip your wire and make sure it's tucked in so nothing unravels. take a piece of the larger wire and make a little hook for the top.
this is my finished ornament:
***
we had enough broken china that we made ornaments for my mom, my aunt becky, myself, my sister, and my cousins tara and mindy. so instead of it being a complete loss, now we all have a little memento to remember her by.

10 things that made me happy this week . . .

1. christmas bonus.

2. trip to los angeles' fashion district to check out flowers and fabric for kristen's wedding in january. very successful.

3. we finally picked out dates and location for our friend weekend getaway in february.

4. final prank of the christmas season successfully completed.

5. christmas programs at church. i actually participated in the choir this year.

6. when i got home from los angeles on saturday, i walked in the door and afton came running around the corner and gave me a hug. it was so cute i almost died.

7. service opportunities. what a blessing it is to have chances to exhibit christ-like behavior.

8. going to bed at a ridiculously early hour. (i went to bed at 9:00 on friday night so i could wake up at 4:00 to leave for los angeles the next morning.)

9. i finally made it in to get my eyebrows done. (it's been almost 3 months.) there are some things i am capable of doing myself, like my finger and toe nails, and my eyebrows, but it's just so lovely to have someone else take care of it for you.

10. my mom had this china tea-pot of that belonged to her mother (my grandma mazur). it was in a box in the garage, and over the summer one of the boys knocked it over and broke it. so sad. but i kept it, and we made christmas ornaments from the broken pieces. i'll post pictures and directions later this week.

today i . . .

- took my civil war final (which i feel alright about) and got my final paper back (which i got an a on).

- talked to my russian history professor. apparently i have an a in the class without the final, so i don't have to take it!

- officially finished my semester. (let there be great rejoicing!)

- celebrated with a chocolate milkshake and chick-fil-a.

- worked

- went to my ward fhe christmas party. for the white elephant gift exchange i took a set of bump-its, which may not be that funny to you, but it made me and my friends laugh . . . hard.

- made a christmas wreath.

- spent the rest of the night by the fire, watching enchanted and making these christmas ornaments:

how was your day?

10 things that made me happy this week . . .

1. turned in last major assignment of the semester.

2. finished decorating the house.

3. 2 out of 3 pranks pulled off. one more in the works and i shall be done for the season.

4. sacrament meeting consisted of a copious amount of singing of christmas hymns. me gusta!

5. russian red lipstick by mac.

6. rain, rain, and more rain. keep it coming . . .

7. as of friday i hadn't purchased a single christmas gift. saturday night i went shopping, with only one idea. i returned home with 90% of my shopping done. and thus, i have my first christmas miracle of the season.

8. saw the movie invictus on saturday night. great flick. further inspires me to read a biography of nelson mandela. also reminds me why i love latin and poetry so much.

9. watched white christmas at classic movie night. between that and holiday inn i'm feeling inspired to buy an inn in rural new england and set up life there.

10. we went to see handel's messiah. oh how it inspires me. i was strong and did not bawl like a sissy-la-la, but i did get all teary during for unto us a child is born and the hallelujah chorus. it's just inhuman not to! everyone should hear the hallelujah chorus live at least once in their life. and can i tell you how much i love the symbolism of standing during the hallelujah chorus.

10 things that made me happy this week . . .

1. officially had last tsarist russia class, and maybe, just maybe, i might get away with not taking my final. we shall see after i turn in the last revision of my last assignment. o' to be rid of russia and never have to consider it's history again. (and to think i had such high hopes to start off with.)

2. we have begun the indoor christmas decorating. it's a pretty rough draft of what will be, but that's all going to be taken care of by moi later this week as gwen has flitted off to seattle for the week and left yours truly in charge of decking these halls. *warning* my mischievous self has been awakened and i'm looking forward to a game of "lets see if mom finds the thing i did that she would never let me do if she were here but she's not so i did it . . "

3. went for a lovely little stroll down christmas tree lane this weekend. do all towns have a version of christmas tree lane? how tragic if they don't. and here we sit in fresno, ca with two! christmas tree lane and huntington boulevard.

4.whilst walking down christmas tree lane you are exposed to several wonders. of course there are lights and santas and christmas trees and elfs (elves?). but on christmas tree lane you can also see optimus prime and bumble bee with santa hats, spiderman, and my personal favorite, santa riding a killer whale. that's a crowd pleaser, right there.

5. hats.

6. christmas crafts.

7. heidi and logan moved in across the street. they're mostly settled. *bonus - i will now be able to find my mascara where i left it.

8. first presidency christmas devotional. truth be told, i fell asleep half way through the first talk and apparently started snoring so someone threw a pillow at me to wake me up halfway through the second talk. but i really liked mo-tab singing "for unto us a child is born." that george handel sure did have a way with a tune.

9. one of afton's first words has turned out to be "touchdown." her dad is so proud. she puts her arms up in goalposts and shouts it out. mostly it sounds like "dou-dou," but we understand. also, she has started to shake her head no, which should probably be ominous, but it's still in the incredibly cute stage.

10. scrabble slam. it's kind of like scrabble and boggle crammed into a card game. it's on my christmas list.
